Altbau

Altbau—German for “old building”—is a personal piece exploring Juan’s subconscious interpretation of family life. Each room becomes its own psychological world: Each room becomes a different theatrical stage, capturing the personalities, routines, memories and imagination that together make up family life.

The house acts almost like a mind itself, suggesting that a family is not one shared reality, but a collection of individual inner worlds connected by the spaces—and relationships—between them.

The mixed-media piece combines digital illustration printed on canvas paper and mounted within a laser-cut wooden structure, turning the architecture into part of the narrative. Altbau was exhibited at The Holy Art in Amsterdam.
